Learn to be a driving instructor Step one – make sure you meet the entry requirements

This is very important. If you don’t meet the three main requirements you won’t be able to go ahead and take the tests to become a driving instructor. In the last six years, you should have held a valid driving licence for at least four of them. This must be a full licence and not a provisional one.

It should also be valid in the UK or the EU. Aside from this you will also be checked for criminal convictions, including any motoring convictions you may have picked up. If you have ever been disqualified from driving you will not be able to go ahead and take the tests.

Learn to be a driving instructor step two – taking the tests to become an instructor

You need to pass three tests in order to become an Approved Driving Instructor. This is often shortened to an ADI. You will learn to be a driving instructor by taking a theory test first of all. This is done on computer.

The second part of the test is practical in nature and will test your driving skills. Finally you will also be tested to see how good your teaching ability is. As you can see it is not enough to be good at driving. You must also be able to teach those skills to others.

Learn to be a driving instructor step three – take tests every four years to retain your approved status

As you would expect, you will be tested every few years once you have first passed the required tests to become a driving instructor. It is important to be sure you still have the necessary skills to continue teaching students how to drive.

However there are also various associations – including the Driving Instructors Association – that hold courses throughout the year. These can help to polish your skills in lots of different ways. For example you can get a Diploma in Driving Instruction. This is not necessary to pass the tests and get work as a driving instructor, but it will certainly help your cause if you do get it. It is said that passing the tests to become a qualified instructor is a difficult process. But it is difficult for a reason. When you learn to be a driving instructor you will be taking on a very important job indeed – and one that you are bound to find very rewarding too.
