Training to be a IT professional
Depending on the route an individual chooses to take into a career in IT, a different course of training will be required. Good GCSE grades (A-C) and A Levels/A-S Levels will stand an individual in good stead. A degree will give a good, brad scope of a subject, but runs the risk of becoming out of date, even before it is completed. Therefore, a popular training path would be a broad IT or CS (computer science) degree, followed by certification with Microsoft or Cisco that will allow the individual access to the latest technologies and potentially allow them to specialise. A broad background coupled with a specialisation appears to be the most sought after combination, but these must be teamed with experience so the individual should seek work placements or work experience where ever possible within the training period.
How long does it take to become qualified?
A degree in IT or computer science should take between 3 and 4 years depending on the individual course. Additional certifications can take anywhere from 8 weeks online to 12 months each.
What are the IT Training entry requirements?
Although there are no formal entry requirements for the Cisco and Microsoft certification, it is important that the individual check with the college or online institution prior to application. The entry requirements for a university degree are good GCSE grades (A-C) and good A-Level grades or A/S Level grades. Some institutions may require a science or maths based subject at A-Level for entrance to an IT or computer science degree.
