Quite often we choose a particular job because it promises a good income. So one of the first questions people ask when they are considering being a driving instructor is how good the driving instructor pay /salary will be.
No guarantee of regular income
The most important thing to remember is that driving instructors are not employed. T
his means you cannot look forward to having a regular assured income. It may fluctuate from day to day and week to week. It may also vary depending on the time of year.
Is it fair to work out an estimated income according to the charge you make for each lesson?
Most lessons are currently around £20 to £25 per hour, although it can depend on the area. You may well find figures that are lower than this, and sometimes instructors will offer cheaper rates if a pupil buys a ‘pack’ of five or ten lessons in advance.
However even if we say you will take £20 an hour for the privilege of giving a driving lesson, this is not the driving instructor pay /salary figure you will be looking for. As is common with any type of business there will be outgoings to consider as well.
The cash you bring in each day is the gross amount you earn and not the net amount. In order to find out how much you could earn as a driving instructor, you have to take away the deductions too. For example there will be the cost of hiring your dual control car.
You also have to consider things like wear and tear and the cost of fuel. Advertising is also essential in order to find more clients. You also have to think about earning the money to replace the amount you have spent on qualifying to become a driving instructor in the first place.
Can you earn more as time goes by?
Yes there is every chance you will earn more money as your business develops. Some costs are ongoing, such as car hire. But others – such as the cost of qualifying to be an instructor – are only paid out in advance of starting your business.
As word of mouth spreads and more people seek you out for lessons, you will hopefully earn more. However it should be remembered that there is a ceiling on how much you can earn. There are only so many lessons you can give in a day, and you have to spend time going from one to the next as well.
A driving instructor pay can be better than some other jobs, but it is important to be realistic. It can also be a lot less than some of the adverts would have you believe
