Being a firefighter seems to be a very dramatic job, and indeed it can be. No two days will be the same and it’s not all about fighting fires
either. Those in charge of recruiting new firefighters to the job are looking out for particular qualities and attributes. You must display these and also exhibit a good level of fitness. The most important thing to remember is that this is not going to be a quick process. If you want to be recruited into the fire brigade it pays to find out as much as you can before you apply.
This is the most important thing to find out first of all. Not all fire services recruit all the time; in fact they may only do so every few years. If you visit your local station they should be able to advise you of when the next recruitment drive will be. If you find there will not be one for quite some time, don’t worry. You can use the next few months or more to find out what you need to do to be in with the best chance of joining the fire service. You can work on making sure you are fit enough to pass the physical tests and find out what else you can do to improve your chances too.
As you find out more about the fire service you will see that they have a wide range of personal qualities and attributes they expect every single firefighter to have. These are known as PQAs for short. They include being open to changes as they occur, being good at teamwork, focusing on safe working practices and much more besides. The application form you will need to fill in will require you to adhere to this wide range of PQAs. This means you should read through them all and familiarise yourself with them before you apply.
As we mentioned above, the application form should be filled in properly and with care to ensure you stand the best chance of success. According to official figures almost 90% of people who fill in the application form fail at this early stage. This means that if you pay attention to how to fill it in and how to get the right information in the right places you stand a much better chance of going further.
You will have to pass a range of tests once you have got past the application form part of the firefighter recruitment process. These include a physical, a medical and an interview. You must pass all these sections in order to successfully reach the training stages. It may seem as if the firefighter recruitment process is a long winded one. It is in some ways, but it also ensures that only the right people are taken on for this challenging and multi faceted job. If you are the right person for the job, you will stand a good chance of getting through all the stages to become a firefighter.
