To become a hairdresser you will need some basic hairdressing qualifications which can be attained through one of the many hairdresser training programs available. The most widely recognised hairdressing qualification that you can get is an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification).
The NVQ in Hairdressing/Barbering/Combined Hair Types is split in to three levels, with each level split in to units (some mandatory and some optional) all of which are worth a certain amount of credits. To pass a level you must obtain a specified number of credits.
The levels are as follows: Level1 – NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 – NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3 – NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing. Generally there are no entry requirements for the hairdressing NVQ. However grades A-C in the core GCSE subjects will help you when it comes to enrolling on your preferred course.
Most course providers will interview you before you sign up to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for the NVQ.
