The beauty industry has many different jobs that you could opt to train for. But nail technicians are arguably becoming more prevalent in these modern times. There are certainly some good opportunities for those who have the right qualifications and are good at working with different people.
But how much does a nail technician earn? Is this a well paid profession or should you expect to earn only a relatively small income?
If you only have basic NVQ Level One training you will only be able to get a job as an assistant, which will incur a lower wage. If you get a Level Two qualification you can become a proper nail technician. This will have a starting salary of around £8,000 to £9,500, depending on where you work.
Yes – experience counts for a lot and the more you have, the more you will be able to earn. Salaries for experienced technicians may rise beyond £12,000. However this assumes you would be employed by someone else; there are other opportunities to consider. You should expect to start at the bottom and work your way towards earning more as an experienced and well qualified technician.
Self employed nail technicians do exist and it provides a good way to strike out and build your own business. If you open your own salon or nail bar you will have considerable overheads to bear in mind, however. These must be paid before you can go into profit. However you also have the opportunity to sell additional products that you can make a profit on, such as nail lotions, creams, nail varnish and other nail care products.
Another option is to visit clients in their own homes, providing your nail technician services on a freelance basis. You will still have overheads in this situation, such as products and petrol, not to mention wear and tear on your car and insurance. But you might make more in this way if you are willing to get out and about and travel.
Tips can bump up the average amount a nail technician can earn.
The best nail technicians are arguably those who are able to provide an outstanding service as well as being pleasant and polite. If the client feels they have been well taken care of and they have nice nails as a result of the appointment, they are likely to pay a tip on top of the cost of the treatment they have had done. In short, the better the service, the better the odds are for earning more as a nail technician.
