So what are a Train Drivers wages really like? Well like most other professions this can vary. A train driver’s salary is going to be dependent on which UK train operating company you work for and how many hours you are contracted to do.
Some companies do pay more than others and this would seem more appealing however with an average of 300 applicants per train driver job you really can’t afford to be picky and in fact you just need to get into the industry to begin with.
The pay scales seem to range from £33,000 to £47,000 once qualified but be aware that the lower pay scale may include other perks that the higher salary paying companies don’t offer. For example with higher wages usually comes less flexibility with regards to hours, thus putting you under higher demand.
So after qualifying you will have the status of newly qualified train driver for the next two years, this in turn means that you will be regularly assessed over these two years to ensure that safety and professionalism is maintained.
You will be required to have regular medicals and attend meetings with management. You will continue to learn over this period of time as technology, laws and procedures are always being renewed and improved.
You need to be aware that the hours you will work will be shifts, so you might be on an early shift starting between 3am to 9am. And you might not be expected to finish until 6pm, or you may even have to work through the night.
The point being made here is that the hours can be unsociable and therefore rather extreme. Most companies offer a 35 to 40 hour week and this is usually worked over four days of work as opposed to the usual five day week.
There is the opportunity to earn more money once you have gained the relevant experience as a train driver. For example you could apply for a promotion into management to improve status or you could even train to become a Train Driver Instructor.
So in general it would seem that a Train Driver’s salary will vary greatly so it proves a little difficult to pin point exactly what you could earn. However what is worth remembering is that this profession is a well paid one in comparison to other careers and its worth mentioning that you would find it hard to seek another job that pays anywhere near as well as this one!
