What Skills Do I Need to Become a Tiler?

Are you able to concentrate for long periods?

Tiling may seem like a fun job when you are tiling your own bathroom. But this may only take a few hours. It doesn’t mean you would enjoy doing it day in and day out as a career.

You should be able to concentrate for hours at a time as you go about your tiling business. You may also have to work around other trades if you are working in a house that is being renovated. You may not always have a quiet and peaceful area to work in.

Could you still concentrate if there is drilling or working going on in other rooms nearby?

Are you good at maths?

This might seem to be an odd question, but as you will see it is actually very relevant to the world of tiling.

If a tile measures a certain size you will need to know how many of them are required for the space you have to tile.

You also need to know where any join will go so you can prepare for it and start in the right place. If you aren’t any good at maths you can soon run into problems with tiling, since you will need to do a few simple calculations.

Do you have good eyesight?

Since you will be working with tiles on a regular basis, you can tell that this is pretty close up work. You need to be able to see that the gaps between the tiles are the same all the way across the tiling. If you don’t have good close up eyesight you will need to wear glasses, although this shouldn’t hamper you in any way provided they are comfortable to wear throughout the day.

As you can see you will need to have certain skills and abilities to be a good tiler. In addition you have to have experience in tiling to provide a really good job. Experienced tilers make the job look easy, which probably isn’t surprising!

Consider all the above points and think about whether you would enjoy a course in tiling to get to know what is required.

If you like the idea of tiling, a new career could be waiting for you.
